In the documentary called Dior and I directed by Frédéric Tcheng, he showed viewers what it was like behind the scenes of a the making of a Dior couture line. The documentary follows the new Christian Dior, Raf Simmons. Simmons is appointed the creative director in 2012 and that is when the documentary starts. He has to design his first couture line in six weeks. It teaches the viewer all about the behind the scenes of designing a fashion line, and really highlights how much the seamstresses really are the ones that make the line.
In the house of Dior, there is a finite process of designing a fashion line. It is so interesting, because there are multiple branches of people who make each piece of clothing. Simmons is the creative director who makes the patterns and edits the sketches, but he isn’t the one who makes the clothes. I think that as a society, when we think of a designer like Raf Simmons we think that he does everything in making the clothes, but that isn’t true. It is the women and men in the Dior house workshop that actually put everything together based on the designer’s visions. For the amount of time that it takes to make every detail right, making the fashion line is a team effort for sure.
The other aspect of the Dior house is how many time consuming things that happen only take six weeks, but should take three to four years. The fashion line is made in a time crunch, and everything is done last minute. To the common eye, we see fashion shows like Dior or Gucci and they look perfect from the hemming to the model’s makeup. This is something that is a projection because it is pure and utter cautious until the moment the designer finishes walking at the end of the show. It is an all-night non-stop creative process that is always being changed and altered.
The documentary overall, was a very detailed perception of how the fashion design industry works. I was very informative and gave me as a viewer the truth of how the clothing line is made. I loved Dior and I and would recommend to any fellow fashion lovers out there.
